Commercial Story 008 / Publishing + Digital Transformation

From Print Publications to Digital Destinations

Building multichannel audience experiences during publishing's transition to the web.

Executive summary

Rodale's publications had already earned authority in print. The assignment was to extend that trust into useful digital experiences built for discovery, response and continued participation.

Context

Rodale was the setting. Media transformation was the story.

From 2003 through 2007, I worked as an independent contractor across Rodale properties as a junior art director, contributing designer and web developer. The brands were established. My role was to help make their digital expression useful, consistent and deployable.

The publishing inflection point

Print created authority. Digital created continuity.

The opportunity was not to reproduce a magazine online. It was to extend the relationship the publication had already earned.

The multibrand assignment

Shared production discipline. Brand-specific execution.

Every property required its own editorial voice and visual standards. The operating method had to scale across them.

Commercial pathways

Owned media, third-party placements and email connected awareness to registration, trial and subscription opportunities.

Project volume reflects James Robertson's operating record; surviving artifacts and the 2010 archival résumé substantiate the brands, formats and responsibilities represented.

The operating model

My role sat between the brand book and the back end.

The work had to be compliant in two ways: faithful to the brand and functional inside the technology.

01Brief + business objective
02Brand-system interpretation
03Concept + interface design
04HTML, CSS + interactive production
05Creative + technical approval
06Format adaptation + deployment

Evidence / Men's Health

An editorial website became a deeper audience destination.

The evolving interface combined editorial content with search, subscriptions, newsletters, tools, blogs, video and campaign pathways into programs such as The Abs Diet.

Restored archival Men's Health website interface showing editorial modules, subscription offers and Abs Diet promotion.
Early archived interface: editorial programming, subscription conversion and campaign promotion in one destination.
Restored archival Men's Health homepage with editorial stories, video promotion and Abs Diet advertising.
Expanded content architecture connected daily editorial utility with video, newsletters and paid programs.
Restored archival Men's Health article page with navigation, supporting content and newsletter registration.
Article-level experiences kept discovery, related content and audience capture within the brand environment.

The surrounding interfaces are archival captures. Failed Flash placements and empty media regions have been restored with representative period-style campaign artwork for presentation; the replacement artwork is not represented as the original deployed creative.

Evidence / Acquisition to participation

Campaign media created clear next steps.

Email, banners and landing pages were designed as connected parts of an audience journey - not isolated assets.

Archived HTML email designed for The Abs Diet with free-trial and book-purchase calls to action.
The Abs Diet HTML email connected editorial authority to a free-trial and deeper program participation.
Archived Biggest Loser Club registration and profile interface supporting a free audience account.
Biggest Loser Club translated television awareness into a free profile, program utility and a pathway toward paid participation.
Archived Best Life website designed as an editorial, expert-content and subscription destination.
Best Life organized editorial depth, expert voices, newsletter acquisition and portfolio cross-promotion.
